MSHS Laptop Program 2007/08 Conditions and Options

At present, WAB IT supports Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 and Apple's 10.4.x (Tiger) operating systems. These two operating systems have been throughly tested, updated, and found to work with all internal WAB systems. While we do appreciate students want to run the latest operating systems, e.g., MS Vista Business or Apple's Leopard, IT can not fully support either one at this time due to various incompatibilities between the software and our internal systems. We currently testing both and hope to have all incompatibilities resolved by Spring. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes students/parents.

All WAB netizens (those who enjoy information infrastructure) are expected to behave in accordance with the parameters articulated in t\ he Acceptable Use Agreement. We estimate as many as six-hundred students in MS and HS will operate their own computers on the school network. This co\ mbined with WAB eight-hundred plus computers makes a lot to keep our eye on. So, please understand that WAB IT wants to maintain the most stable envi\ ronment for teaching and learning as possible, i.e., keep it simple.

If a student modifies or augments the operating system or does not keep his/her software up to date, e.g., removes Service Pack 2 or fails to download virus/security/spyware updates, he/she may experience difficulty in accessing resources on WAB network, e.g., printing, servers, etc. If this occurs, WAB IT will review the laptop, but it is ultimately the responsibility of the owner/operator to ensure the laptop functions.

Also, if we find a student or his/her laptop acting in a malicious fashion, e.g., propagating a virus, defaming persons, using peer-to-peer software, WAB IT reserves the right to confiscate the offending laptop to maintain the integrity of the WAB network.

Students using an existing owned laptop or purchasing a new laptop independently are required to insure that the laptop meets WAB Technical Specifications hardware, operating system, software, and network.

All laptops, self supplied, past grant machines, and new grant machines will need to be registered with WAB IT before use at school. A local admin account will be created to allow WAB IT access to system files, i.e., periodic security/content checks. Attempts to remove this account is a violation of the acceptable-use-policy. A "netizen" certification sticker will then affixed to the top of the laptop case. The sticker should not be removed as it provides a quick visual reference for teachers/staff that a laptop meets WAB technical Specification.
